News
A new tree was added to the church landscape by the Floras Amo Garden Club, in memory and honor of the founding members who were also members of the church. The following story of how the club was founded in the mid 1950’s, was told by Mary Harrison it’s founder in her book Mary’s Plant Farm A Love Story.
“…the church was the reason I was a founding member of a Garden Club. I had become a member of the church’s Ladies Aid Society, the women’s group of the church. And if you have ever been a member of a small rural church, especially in those days, the women were mostly farm wives and stay at home mothers. They were the money makers for projects and helped pay those unexpected bills when the treasury was empty. I was the youngest in the organization at that time, and those lovely older ladies were so kind to me, the newcomer to the community. Well, I found a kindred spirit in gardening with the minister’s wife, and before the meetings we would talk gardening. As the minister’s wife, Celina hosted church meetings at the parsonage. Her husband, Reverend Browning, was the principal of the Camden School, 16 miles away (and he also had school meetings at the parsonage). Celina lamented that if she didn’t have to keep the house clean for all those meetings, she would have a cabin with a dirt floor, so she could just stay outside in the garden all summer. Celina and I often delayed the start of the Ladies Aid meeting to talk about our gardens, and Reverend Browning asked us why we didn’t just start a garden club so that the church ladies could get to the church business at hand. This sounded good to me. And this nudge was all I needed to get the ball rolling. I invited my gardening friends to the house and we formed the Floras Amo Garden Club”. Members remembered are: In honor of Carol Beckett and memory of Dorothy Eichel and Mary Harrison.
